Rodeo and ranch horses are elite athletes built for performance. Every sharp turn around a barrel, sudden stop in the roping box, and long day navigating rough ranch terrain puts immense mechanical stress on their body. When muscles tighten and fascia restricts, it leads to short-striding, cinchiness, and compensatory soreness that holds your horse back from performing at their best.
Equine osteopathy and equine massage therapy benefit your horse by optimizing their entire musculoskeletal system through specialized, hands-on modalities. By combining targeted soft-tissue release with passive range-of-motion techniques, this structural approach relieves tension in deep muscle layers, opens restricted joints, and restores natural stride symmetry.
At High Plains Bodywork, I don't just chase symptoms—I assess how your horse's entire body functions. Non-invasive, performance-driven osteopathic techniques melt away tension from heavy gear and high-impact sports, helping your equine athlete move with maximum flexibility, recover faster, and reach their peak potential.
BENEFITS OF EQUINE OSTEOPATHY
- Enhances muscle tone
- Improves muscle recovery as a result of competition/strenuous exercise
- Increases circulation
- Releases and removes accumulated toxins in the system
- Reduces compensation patterns
- Releases tension
- Alleviates pain
- Improves flow of lymph fluid
- Improves range of motion in joints
- Encourages release of tension
- Improves relaxation in anxious horses
- Alleviates edema in stall-bound horses
- Improves flexibility/suppleness
SIGNS YOUR HORSE NEEDS AN OSTEOPATHY SESSION:
- Short-striding or loss of power in the hindquarters
- Difficulty holding or taking a specific lead
- Bracing, rearing, or fighting the box in roping events
- Shoulder stiffness or hitting barrels during turns
- Cinchiness, pinning ears, or biting when being saddled
- Head tossing, leaning on the bit, or resistance to collection
- Asymmetrical muscle development or uneven sweat patterns
- Sluggish recovery times or general resistance under saddle
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING A SESSION:
I treat every horse like the elite athlete they are. A standard equine osteopathy session takes approximately 45-60 minutes, depending on your horse's specific needs and comfort level. I work at a pace that keeps your horse relaxed, cooperative, and receptive to the structural changes.
Static & Dynamic Assessment: I begin by evaluating your horse’s conformation, posture, and muscle symmetry on the ground. If possible, I will watch the horse move in hand to identify structural restrictions, tracking issues, or short-striding.
Full-Body Palpation: Using precise anatomical palpation, I map out areas of heat, deep fascial restriction, muscle spasms, and structural asymmetry.
Targeted Soft-Tissue & Myofascial Release: Utilizing advanced European equine osteopathic techniques, I systematically melt away deep-seated tension in the neck, shoulders, topline, and hindquarters caused by high-impact work and resultant compensation patterns.
Joint Articulation & Range of Motion: Once the muscles are relaxed, I gently guide the limbs through passive range-of-motion stretching. This safely opens up the shoulders, mobilizes the hips, and frees up restricted joints without sudden or forceful adjustments.
Post-Session Consultation: I wrap up by discussing what I found during the session. You will receive customized recommendations for post-session turnout, riding adjustments, or specific stretches to help maintain your horse's new level of mobility between visits.
